Feb 29, 2008  Hi, I have a 4X4 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.5L V6, with a 5 speed manual transmission. There is a 'sound' best described as a muted knock. This sound is most pronounced at about 1250 RPM's after dr.

I'm looking to buy one & the the price compairison is dramatic. Is there any difference? Do the 1.6 & 2.0 use the same manual transmission? Does the tracker & suzuki vitara use the same transmission? They use so much else that is the exact same.

I found one cheap but it's in a 2.0l vitara and I think mine is a 1.6l tracker. Maybe it is a 2.0l both are 1999, both are manual, both 4x4 does this mean that i can purchase & install that one? Sorry if my post is newbish, i just don't know where else to go to figure this out. Many many 'thank you's' in advance! The only difference is the yokes and the 2.0 has a hydraulic clutch and the 1.6 a cable, but it switches over with just 2 bolts. (Make sure you get the yokes with the new transmision as the splines are diffent.) I put a manual from a 1.6 into my sport which as a 1.8 with no problems. The fith gear is geared a little lower but not hardly enough to notice.

With the 1.8 liter transmision I would turn over 3k RPMs at 55 MPH and with the 1.6 liter at 3k I turn over 49 MPH with stock tires. As far as I can tell first through fourt are identicle. It's an easy swap. My wife has a 99 Tracker with 2.0 and it is the same tranny as my sport. Older 1.6s - SE series (98 and earlier) had cable clutches, later 1.6s, SQ series 99 and after) had hydraulic clutches. The original poster was specific, he said 99, which means he's looking at the SQ series, and there were only two manual transmissions used on the SQ - the Type 1 used on the SQ416 (1.6 litre) & SQ420 (2.0 litre), and the Type 2 used on the SQ625(2.5 litre).
