Hi John I found this diagram on another site. I do not see the spring as a listed part. If you have not got it by now, give the diagram a look. Check diagram Bar/Housing/Oil Tank. I hope this helps. Reality is chainsaws are extremely dangerous for inexperienced. If you can learn proper operations procedures, proper safety gear then don't use a chainsaw. These machines can easily take off limbs, and I am not writing about wood limbs neither. If you do find yourself using a chainsaw, make sure someone knows where you are at before going get yourself injured or worse. Never use E-85 unless displays otherwise. Mix fuel with oil, not oil with fuel with the correct ratio, most common is either 40:1 or 50:1; 40 parts to one part. A 50:1 mixture is 2.67 ounces of 2-cycle oil to 1 gallon of gasoline; wrong mixture eventually with score the piston walls, called a burn-out then saw will not stay running. Most all saw have a built in F-setting, which means the saw will not idle long before shutting off, called a Fail safety switch.
Motor oil is not the same as Bar Lube; using motor oil will burn up the Bar before operator can realize danger one's in. Do not operate a saw with a burnt or warp Bar. Make sure the blade is moving in the correct direction.

Keep chain sharp and adjusted tension correctly, or you'll damage the sprocket drives. Check tension from bottom of bar, not top. Do not plow into the ground, do not cut into anything that isn't of wood product. As for air/fuel mix on a Poulan saw. Poulan tools are not sold to the public; however, if you do those things your saw will last many years.
Remove the air cleaner out of your way. Remove two screws that fastens unit; now have a clean work area before you start, not oil here grease there and junk around. When you remove the carburetor make sure you watch for any small gaskets that may fall out. I just said in one review, if you assemble back, and the air hole on the piston housing gets blocked it will not run or crank no matter how many carbs you change out.
Take a picture before you start, and mark the fuel lines with a permanent marker; and disassemble slowly and when carb is ready to remove take needle nose pliers and remove the throttle cable, set aside. Now you can rebuild the carburetor. Most all these 2 cycle carbs are out of Tennessee through a company called Zama. Range from $35 to $100, but can rebuilt for around $20 or less, often times for less than $5 bucks if you know what you are doing. 99% of all carb failures are from trash, water in gas, varnished fuel, or gasket issue. If never been removed since coming from factory, the issue is allowing fuel sit in basis over the season.

Be sure to add fuel before starting the engine, not when it's running or hot. The liquid could overflow and flame up. Keep hands and feet away from the lawn mower blade even if the machine is turned off. Once cleared of an obstruction, a blade can swing around and cause injury. Consider Kevlar-filament chaps (when using a chainsaw) that are designed to tangle into the chainsaw chain on contact and stop the saw in a fraction of a second as opposed to cutting into your leg.
