Based on what I've read here and at the Vintage Tractor Resource, the beast in my garage is a model 681 (gas engine, Select-O-Speed transmission, 540-N-1000 PTO) that has been converted to a 12-volt ignition. I tried ordering the Owner's Manual from this website but the manual that arrived wasn't for the 681; it didn't discuss either the SOS or the special PTO. I know the manual exists because I once saw one. Any idea where I can find one?

I think the SOS has lost its transmission fluid and I can't figure out where to add more. OK, I'm hoping the problem is just a leak-I was driving down the road (in 9th gear) when I noticed that I was slowing down even though the engine was still cranking right along.

I coasted to a stop, and tried every gear with no luck. I put it in Neutral with the engine still running and my wife towed me home. Any help finding the manual would be appreciated. I've tried Ankeny Tractors and they didn't have it. Thanks, Mike. Bill, I was able to find the plug based on the information in Greg's post but I haven't got the plug off yet-I need to add something to my tool set that will fit the plug and handle a lot of torque as the plug is really tight.

Nice picture of your tractor; it looks like mine but in better shape.:) One difference I noticed is that mine has a metal 'front bumper' that is bolted to the part of the frame that supports the front wheels. It's made out of heavy steel and has what looks like a hole for an implement hitch at the middle front.

Thanks, Mike. I misread you inquiry.

The Ford Tractor Owner's Manual for the 601 and 801 Series Tractor is part number SE 6085-G and is also available from Evan. When I bought mine it was $8.95. The service manual I referred to the last time was the one put out by New Holland and is about an inch thick.

I&T also puts out a service manual. It is Manual No. It costs less than the New Holland one, but is only 1/4' thick.

By the way, per the I&T Service manual: 'To check, remove the pipe plug located on the right side of the transmission housing. Fluid should be at the plug with tractor standing level. If fluid is low, fill to plug level through plug opening, with Ford Hydraulic Fluid, Specification M-2C-41.' Greg, Thanks for directions from the I&T Service Manual. I was able to locate the plug but not get it off.

Looks like I need a.much. larger screwdriver.

My initial attempt to get it off resulted in a damaged thumb and much blood; that's what I get for being in a hurry and not wearing gloves.:( I'm going to try and stop by the hardware store after work tomorrow-I'm hoping that they'll have a very large screwdriver attachment for a half-inch socket wrench. As tight as the plug is, I'm going to need a lot of torque to get it out. Which service manual would you recommend to someone who doesn't have much experience putting things back together? The New Holland or the I&T? Thanks, Mike.
