I have a 1991 Indy 650 RXL EFI. I'm looking for a service manual or something similar. I want to know for example what the spark timing is supposed to be, does the CDI box have an advance curve? Other useful info to know would be how the oil metering pump should be adjusted. Also looking to find out what kind of clearance there should be on the magneto coils, I don't seem to be getting enough power to keep the battery charged below 4000-5000rpm, is that normal?

I do understand that permanent magnet generators will generate much less power at low revs, but I'm not sure exactly where it should start generating enough to keep the fuel pump running without draining the battery. I'm also wondering what differences there are between the carburated and fuel injected versions of the 650 motor. So far I've established that the EFI motor has a smaller pipe, so tuned for higher revs (which matches the specification of a longer spring in the front clutch, giving more preload so it'll bite at a higher rpm).

Yes, the CDI box holds the timing curve, not the ECU. Yes, low revs drain the batteries. Somewhere between 3000 and 4000 RPM the battery will start charging. Lots of people pull the injectors and throw on carbs with no other changes, and tend to lose about 25 horsepower by doing so.

Swapping the Stator, CDI, pipe and clutches will generally get you about half of that back, but if you put triple pipes on it either with CARBS or EFI will give you a sizable boost in power. (if you triple pipe the EFI you wil need a chip tuned to the pipes). A couple of pointers on your RXL. (1)As far as the charging system goes, they are not very good at charging. Anything below 2000 RPMs is just draining the battery.

I just give mine a new batery every season. (2) Inspect, clean, and repair anything suspect in the wiring harness. This in always a trouble area on these fuel injected sleds. (3) If you have a laptop or a method of connecting your RXL to a computer download the select monitor program which was written by Resnu (free and available on this site, just do a search for it). Contact MrHolmquist and purchase a cable from him. I have one and its a huge help with things like adjusting your TPS. I hope these help.
